…”Your appointments ended early December” – Government insist

The Bayelsa State Government has warned hoodlums masquerading as former political appointees against unlawful acts that could threaten the peace of the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Kemela Okara, in a statement sent to NAIJA LIVE TV advised the good people of the state to restrain their friends and relatives from associating with people with sponsored evil intent to cause mischief in the state.

Barr. Okara said that credible information at the disposal of the state government revealed that opposition elements and detractors of the government were sponsoring unscrupulous elements to subvert the peace of the state in the guise of protesting non payment of salaries.

According to him, the government is not responsible for payment of salaries to political appointees who were dropped in early December as the government moved into the phase of transition.

The SSG said that those entitled to severance benefits would be paid in accordance with the rules at the appropriate time.

He warned that any appointee other than those retained to render services essential to ongoing transition would be treated as hoodlums on a mission to cause mischief

He said that the Government had a meeting with Labour leaders who were misinformed and misled to shut down the operations of a government office in the state on Tuesday.

Okara stated further that the Labour leaders called off their action after the intervention from the government.

He noted that detractors were deploying people from some local government areas to cause mischief in the bid to damage the image of the government which is winding up after eight years of meritorious service to the state.

Okara said that it was unfortunate that some appointees of the government who were appointed for long periods would make themselves available as tools of destabilization in the hands of mischief makers rather that bring thankful.

He said that the governor made more appointments that any other administration in the bid to help people to manage the difficult economic situation in the country.

He explained that their appointment was not punitive but a necessary inevitable decision for the transition.

“Since 2012 the Governor has given several appointments to people just to equip them to manage the difficult economic situation. He made more appointments than any previous administration.

“By December, we had cause to downsize since the state was in transition. A decision was taken to keep only those whose jobs are essential to manage the transition while the rest were asked to go.

“So the Government of Bayelsa is not responsible for the payment of salaries of appointees who were dropped in early December after serving almost eight years.”

He warned those sponsoring mischief and their cohorts to be conscious of the fact that ‘there is a government in place in the state till February 14.’
