As the World marks the 2022 World Book and Copyright Day on April 23rd annually, The Executive Secretary of the Bayelsa State Education Development Trust Fund (EDTF), Dr (Mrs) Alice Atuwo, has charged students and creative writers to explore the positive use of digital devices by being Technologically savvy to adopt the use of E-Books and other social media avenues to enhance the dying reading culture amongst youths in Nigeria.

Dr Atuwo stated this in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital, at an event to mark the 2022 World Book Day as put together by the South-South Writers’ Union (SOSOWU) led by Mr Amatare Mozimo, as Chairman, in conjunction with the State Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) led by Chief Adolphus Munamuna.

The Executive Secretary, (EDTF) expressed concern over the negative use of digital media devices whereas these portable innovations have actually made reading easier and more assesible.

Dr Atuwo spoke of her being a bookworm in her younger days and urged the young generation to do same as it opens up a vista of knowledge that can take them to the pinnacle of their careers if followed diligently.

In his remark, the Permanent Secretary of the Bayelsa State Ministry of Education, Mr Christopher Ewhrudjakpo, acknowledged the state Government’s efforts at giving free education to students in primary and secondary public schools assuring participants that the Prosperity Government of Senator Douye Diri and his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, are not leaving any stone unturned in ensuring that Bayelsa State tops the education chart in the comity states.

Other Dignitaries at the World
Day Event who gave pep talks to students on the need to imbibe a good reading habit, were The Member Representing Yenagoa Kolokuma Opokuma Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives (National Assembly) and Chairman of the Azaiki Public Library, Prof. Steve Azaiki (represented Engr. Utavie Egba); the Executive Chairman of the Bayelsa Post Primary Schools Board (PPSB) High Chief Millionaire Asangba represented by Mrs Fiyesinkumo Egbe Gibson-Nanakumo; Dr. Akpos Adesi (Registrar, University of Africa, Toru-Orua);
Barr. Dise Ogbise of the Bayelsa State Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT), Dr Hephzibah Suobo; and the State Chairman of the South South Writers’ Union SOSOWU) Mr. Amatare Mozimo, who was the Chief Host of the event.

The event was declared open by the National President of SOSOWU Chief Alaska Ekele who lauded the efforts of the Bayelsa State Chapter of SOSOWU led by its Chairman, Mr Amatare Mozimo and its executive, for putting up the event to boost the reading culture amongst students to commemorate the World Book Day describing the day as the ‘Christmas Day’ for all writers.

Participating Schools had a Spoken Word Poetry Contest with an SS 2 Student – Miss Ogheneme Jerry of Belary International Schools winning the First Prize as the World Book Day Champion, while Miss Flourish Johny of New Total Child Academy was the First Runner-Up and a JSS Two Student, Master Tobi Olukole of Rhema Heritage School clinching the Second Runner-Up slot with choice books as prizes for the Top Three Champions.

Over a thousand books were donated to school students who attended the World Book Day Event in Yenagoa as they went home with choice books of different titles as gift souvenirs donated by various authors and members of SOSOWU and ANA Bayelsa.

The event featured poetry recitations, readings, pep talks and other side Attractions.

Earlier, as a prelude to the World Book Day Event, the organisers (SOSOWU) had paid visits to stakehokders including the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who lauded the efforts of the writers of South-South extraction for putting the dwindling issue of education and reading at the front burner as a panacea to light up the hearts and my minds of young people towards positive values and re orientation.
