Dr. John Idumange has highlighted some reasons why the ongoing Bayelsa Health Summit is Not Necessary for Bayelsans at this period.
The ongoing Summit is attended by Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan and the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire.
Dr. Idumange stated this on his Facebook page (today) as thusly;
“The Health Summit does not build hospitals, train healthcare personnel, deploy doctors, provide health facilities, motivate health officers or buy drugs. We have reports on our health challenges. The Summit is a talkshow designed to put money in the pockets of a few people”.
“1. The health challenges facing Bayelsa State have been well documented in previous reports. Apart from the Covid -19 pandemic, Bayelsans have not invented any disease. Our challenges are primary and secondary health.”
“2. Since Bayelsa State was created in 1996, our main challenge has been funding. We make generous budgetary provisions in the budget for healthcare but deliberately underfund the health sector. The Restoration Administration has put in place the Bayelsa Health Insurance Scheme. What this administration should do is not a summit but to consolidate on the scheme and push it into to the rural and peri-urban areas, revamp the General Hospitals and adequately fund them.”
“We don’t re-invent the wheel. We have robust reports on what to do about our health sector. Nothing has ever been implemented. The question is how much did the Bayelsa State Government budgeted for health in the 2021 budget? How much of the budget have we expended on healthcare delivery.”
“The Bayelsa Health Summit may well be a scam at least to show that government is doing something. What Bayelsans need to find out is the budget for the Summit. Chances are the budget for the Health Summit may be humongous. The Ministry of Health should, in utmost good faith, disclose the cost of the Summit.”
“The health summit tantamounts to re-inventing the wheel. Believe me, no new recommations will be made.” As above so below!
