Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has donated relief materials to Flood Victims across four Internally displaced persons centers in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Presenting the relief items at the IDP camp, Akinima Centre, the Regional Community Health Manager of SPDC, Dr. Akinwumi Fajola, said the gesture is in line with company’s corporate social responsibility.
According to Dr. Akinwumi Fajola the gesture is intended to help victims of the flood come out of the challenges they faced and show express appreciation for the cordial relationship existing between the host communities in the area and the company.
As part of its support to the flood victims, SPDC also provided a long term medical services at the IDP camps in a bid to prevent any possible outbreak of diseases when the people finally return to their homes.
“What we are doing is to feel the pains of the people and show them that we care. We came with food and non-food items to ensure that the people feel as the flood starts to recede.
“The company and its partners have provided over $1 billion to help the people affected by the flood, not just in communities we operate but all the communities that was ravaged by the flood.
“We came with qualified doctors to attend to the medical needs of the people. We are here to provide a long term medical service for chronic, acute and minor ailments.
“And for those we cannot treath here, we have set-up referral health facilities near all affected communities we take them to for further treatment.” He added.
Receiving the items, the chairman of Engene Cluster Development Board, Dr. Zidonu Chucks thanked SPDC for the kind gesture and their continued show of love for the people.
He said over hundred thousand persons were displaced by the flood and properties, including buildings and farmlands, worth billions of naira were destroyed in seven communities that make up the Engene cluster.
Speaking further, he said “what SPDC has done is novel and worthy of commendation because as you all know, when flood recedes victims are exposed to diseases. So this medical outreach would go a long way prevent outbreak of diseases.”
Also speaking, the Engene Cluster Development Board, Mr. Salesman Kio-Pius, said they would mobilize their people to take advantage of the medical services the SPDC has provided.
“It is not only a support for communities in our areas of operations ravaged by the flood, some communities outside our areas of operations but that suffered really severe devastation in Kogi and Anambra States where the impact of the flood was notably severe.
“This is why we would continue to work with SPDC. Even in times that we have issues that are not related to flood, SPDC has been their. So i want to thank them immensely.”
The Centre for Peace, Development and Child Welfare was on hand to monitor the distribution of the relief materials.
