Over three hundred fishermen in Aleto, Eleme local government are thrown into hunger after an oil spill polluted the Okulu River and the surrounding farmlands.

The oil spill which occurred on Sunday has affected fishing activities in Aleto and Eleme communities who depend mainly on fishing to survive as the oil covered the whole waterbody and flowing consistently into the Okulu River without any effort being made to contain it.

Apart from the economic implications, the residents have been forced to move from their community as a result of the stench from the spill.

Preliminary investigation show that the spill was casued by an SPDC pipeline that have since been in a bad condition.

A surveillance officer representing the Pipeline infrastructure, Osaro Prosperous said the odour from the spill poses a potential health hazard to the residents.

The chairman of Eleme Local Government, Obarilomate Aloo, while visiting the site, said though they have been calming the people, for days now, no single person from Shell have showed up in the scene but only called.

He however called for calm from the people in the hope that the right steps will be taken to restore the environment.

The Okulu River which runs from Akpajo, Aleto, Abonchia, and some parts of Ogale in Eleme local government serves as a source of livelihood to more than three hundred registered fishermen.
