OPEN LETTER TO SEN. DOUYE DIRI, THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF BAYELSA STATE

Your Excellency,

I am writing this letter even though I am aware you may not see it and read it.

How is your health? I have to ask of your health, because being a Governor is very stressful. I pray you are Hale and hearty.

Sir, it takes a government just a little bunch of kindness to be lauded by the people. I believe you know this.

When people complain about the lack of vision by government, it is not because they hate government but it is because the government has acted far below bar.

Today, media actors both in the PDP and the APC are eulogizing you not because you have done so much above expectation, but because you were able to work a little close to the bar. The bar is very big and high, of course, if we must consider what we have as a people and where we are.

Sir, the truth is that we want more as a people. We are not yet even close to the expectation, but it is good to commend you for the little you have done so far. The commendation is not done because we are completely satisfied with the result, or because we even owe you the commendation. After all, it is OUR money, and one needs not commend a man for what he did with OUR own money, right?

Yet people commend you, and I am commending you because even if the money is ours, a servant should be applauded for a job well done.

Yes, you are simply doing service to the people and that makes you a servant to the people. Right? Nevertheless, you are servant that must be respected, because a Governor do not only serve, he Leads, and a Leader must be honoured. We are to give honour to whom it is due, so we are told, and I agree.

At this point, I want to urge you, your excellency, to continue the good works. We are even hungry for more. Don’t be discouraged, but do more for us. We are watching. When you serve your people well, they will never forget you in years to come. Let this be your legacy. Don’t stop, keep on doing better even till the end of your tenure. And if you get another, after this one ends, don’t stop. Don’t be like others who stop working after the first tenure.

Your excellency, remember this one thing:

“You will be remembered for how well you served, and not because you were Governor.”

Your excellency, step on toes if that is the moral and legal sacrifice you must make to take us there. Step on all the big and giant toes, but take us there.

May God give you the strength to make Bayelsa State proud, and counted amongst the moved developed places in Africa.
