Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged Bayelsans to preserve their cultural heritage and promote the Ijaw language for future generations.
Represented by his Deputy, the Governor made the call at the 2026 Gbarain UZU, New Yam, Festival in Ogboloma, Yenagoa Local Government Area, where he described culture as a symbol of a people’s identity, history, and unity.
He encouraged young people to embrace the Ijaw language and said the annual festival, which rotates among communities in Gbarain Kingdom, remains an important platform for preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage.
The Ibenanaowei of Gbarain Kingdom, King Funpere Akah, called on the state government and oil companies, including Renaissance Africa Energy Company, to support the dualisation of the Igbogene–Polaku Road and accelerate development in the kingdom.
The ceremony featured the traditional breaking of the Aya Buru, New Yam, and prayers for a fruitful farming season, with several government officials, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries in attendance.
