The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Ogun State chapter, has expressed concern over the shortage of medical doctors in the state, saying only about 1,200 physicians currently serve an estimated population of 9 million people.
The association said the ratio translates to about 1 doctor for every 7,500 residents, describing it as inadequate to meet the state’s healthcare needs.
The NMA also lamented that despite the shortage, doctors who remain in the country instead of seeking opportunities abroad continue to face harassment, intimidation, and attacks from members of the public and, in some cases, security agencies.
The association called attention to the challenges facing the medical profession, warning that the shortage of doctors could further affect healthcare delivery in the state.
