Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has frowned at the move by authorities in the northwest state to sell gold to CBN

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is upset that the Zamfara state government is selling its gold to the CBN.

The deputy Senate president said if Niger Delta states are not selling their oil, the same should not be applicable to Zamfara.

The deputy Senate president stated that the act is wrong, unconstitutional and should not be encouraged

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Nigeria’s deputy Senate president, has kicked against the recent sale of gold bar by Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Omo-Agege who is from oil-rich Delta state, made his grievances known during Senate plenary on Wednesday, October 14.

His words:

“They don’t sell oil in any of the Niger Delta states. I am wondering why the governor of a state should be selling gold bar from Zamfara state to the CBN.”

The Zamfara state government’s announcement that it would sell its gold to the CBN sparked outrage in the country last week.

Many Nigerians frowned at the move, wondering why the state is handling its own resources why the situation is different in the southern part of the country.

The outrage also sparked renewed allegations of nepotism against the Buhari administration, which many critics have been highlighting since 2015.

On social media, many Nigerians voiced their concerns on the move, saying it sends the wrong signal to oil-producing states in the country.

“I will honestly expect the youths of the Niger Delta to ride on the crest of this protest wave to demand their rights!!

“It’s totally unacceptable for Zamfara to have 100% local control of its gold resources while the rest of the regions can’t control their own resources.”
Hamma Hayatu wrote on Twitter:

“I thought by law all minerals resources belong to the federal government, why are they allowing Zamfara to be mining gold? If this is the case then Niger Delta should start oil exploration themselves.
“Clear double standard by the federal government of Nigeria.”
