The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has cautioned against a rushed constitutional amendment to establish state police, calling for wider consultations before a final decision is taken.
In a statement by its Secretary-General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the council said the Federal Government and the National Assembly should ensure broad stakeholder engagement on the proposed reform.
The council said it had been closely monitoring the ongoing national debate and legislative process, describing the state police proposal as an issue with far-reaching implications for justice, national unity and the country’s future.
