ADVERT RATE

Candidate of Liberation Movement at the Bayelsa governorship election, Vijah Eldred Opuama, has asked the Election Petition Tribunal to order for fresh election in the state. It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission-INEC- conducted the Bayelsa governorship poll in November 2019 where the APC candidate, David Lyon was declared winner.

David Lyon was at the verge of being sworn-in when a Supreme Court verdict declared his election a nullity and ordered that the PDP candidate, Duoye Diri be issued certificate as the duly elected governor.

However, Opuama had gone to the Tribunal seeking the disqualification of the PDP, Governor Duoye Diri and his Deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo because according to Opuama, the deputy governor allegedly forged NYSC Exemption Certificate. Opuama claimed that for allegedly presenting a forged NYSC certificate, the Bayelsa Deputy lacked the qualification to contest for the coveted seat in the first place and since there is a judicial precedence that what affects one in a joint ticket ultimately affects the other, the only option is for an order for conduct of fresh election.

He prayed the Tribunal to order INEC to conduct a fresh election in the state. A copy of the petition which was made available to our correspondent listed the quartet of Governor Duoye, his deputy, INEC and the PDP as respondents to the petition. Our correspondent reports that prehearing of the petition is scheduled to take place tomorrow in Abuja
