The Magistrate Court sitting in Yenagoa has rejected a bail application filed on behalf of Mr. Aye O.S. Egberi, head of the Social Media team of the Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), pending the determination of any charges against him.
Magistrate Stanley Ekeru had, on September 10, 2025, in suit number YMCA/747c/2025, ordered Egberi remanded for 30 days at the Okaka Medium Correctional Facility over his alleged involvement in cyberstalking cases targeting the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, and the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri.
According to the police prosecution team, Egberi was arrested by the Operation Puff Adder, led by CSP Chris Uwaogbo, over a write-up reportedly accusing the state police commissioner and the governor of masterminding the July abduction of State High Court Judge, Justice Ebiyerim Umokoro.
During proceedings on Tuesday, Egberi’s defence team, led by Barr. Benjamin S. Ogbara, filed a bail application seeking the court’s order to vacate the remand and admit their client to bail pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The application was supported by a medical report from Dr. Nathan Abule, a Medical Consultant at the Federal Medical Centre, which detailed Egberi’s chronic health conditions, including bronchial asthma and peptic ulcer disease, managed through outpatient care.
However, the police prosecution, represented by Japhet O. Japhet, argued that the remand should stand, noting that the “prosecution would be ready to proceed once the 30-day period elapses”.
After considering arguments from both sides, Magistrate Ekeru rejected the bail application and advised the defence to approach the Federal High Court for relief regarding bail.
Egberi has also been accused of publishing defamatory articles claiming that Governor Diri, Commissioner Idu, and senior officers of the Zone 16 Command orchestrated the recent abduction of a State High Court Judge.
Operation Puff Adder operatives arrested him following directives from the state police commissioner to clarify his allegations.
The police argued that Egberi’s publications were a deliberate attempt to undermine security efforts and sabotage the coordinated rescue operation for the abducted judge.
