AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL SEEKS WAR CRIMES PROBE OVER ALLEGED EXECUTION OF 19 MALIAN SOLDIERS

Amnesty International has called for an independent war crimes investigation following the alleged execution of at least 19 Malian soldiers after they reportedly surrendered.

The rights group said its analysis of videos from the July 18 attack on a military convoy leaving the northern town of Anefis showed soldiers who appeared to be out of combat before being shot.

The convoy was ambushed by Tuareg separatists and fighters from the Al-Qaeda-linked JNIM group, with at least 50 soldiers reportedly killed.

Amnesty International said international humanitarian law provides absolute protection for anyone who has surrendered or is otherwise out of combat, and urged an independent investigation into the incident.
