ADVERT RATE

Over 2,000 students on scholarship in the various Nigerian universities under the Federal Government Amnesty programme have protested the non-payment of their monthly allowances.

The students claimed that they were owed nine months so far.

The beneficiaries have sent a petition to the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, who is also the Coordinator of the Amnesty Office, Prof. Charles Dokubo, through their lawyer, Dr Kayode Ajulo, on the development.

Ajulo in the petition, dated October 30, and made available to our correspondent on Sunday, noted that the students, deployed to some universities across the Niger Delta region, “are being unjustifiably denied payment of monthly stipends and other concomitant benefits.”

He said the development was contrary to the terms and conditions of the sponsorship agreement under the amnesty programme.

“One would have naturally expected that as a professor, you would appreciate the essence and beauty of access to quality education and that the welfare of the Amnesty students would improve under your watch.”

“Instead, the students have been beset with a deliberate lack of empathy and understanding towards their plight.”
