The dethronement of Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, is presently setting social media on fire.

Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, made the announcement during the state executive council meeting.

“The Kano State Executive Council has unanimously approved the dethronement of the Emir of (Kano) Mallam Muhammad Sanusi II at a special sitting held by the council,” Director-General, Media and Communications, Kano State Government, Salihu Yakasai disclosed in a viral tweet on Monday.

Recall that the ex-Emir was Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) between 2009 and 2014, when he was suspended by the administration of then-President Goodluck Jonathan.

In January 2014, he alleged that $20 billion of oil wealth was unaccounted for between 2012 and 2013. He accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) of diverting the money.

But an audit report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) showed that $20 billion did not go “missing” as claimed, although the report did raise some questions, including failure of NNPC subsidiary, Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) to remit $1.48 billion to the Federation Account.

Many observers believe the accusation helped foil Jonathan’s second-term bid in 2015.

Since the announcement of his dethronement, some critics of the ex-CBN governor have been bashing him for helping to bring President Muhammadu Buhari to power.

Some of the critics include ex-social media aide to Jonathan, Reno Omokri.
