A fresh oil spill has been reported at a facility operated by Aiteo Eastern Exploration & Production Company LTD, around River Santa Barbara, Nembe, in Nembe LGA of Bayelsa state.
This serious oil spill, which started on November 1st, 2021 and is still yet to be stopped at Well 1, was reportedly caused by equipment failure and has affected communities like Juju Point and other neighbouring communities within the area.
The incident sprayed crude oil into the environment in gaseous form and the Ecosystem is seriously damaged. The river have been entirely polluted as we speak and fisher folks around that area can’t go to fishing again. The water body is soaked with crude oil.
The people are calling on the National Oil Spill Detection Agency to take proactive steps to ensure that these reoccurring equipment failure incidents from Aiteo oil facilities within the environment of Nembe community do not continue without serious penalties against the company.
Up till this day, Aiteo have not been able to stop the leakage.
