Three persons suspected to be frausters have been arraigned before a Bayelsa State magistrate seating in Yenagoa for allegedly defrauding over 3,000 unsuspecting Bayelsans by trick.

The suspects, Mr Ikiobofa Amasamana, Timila Arthur and Osain James, were said to have obtained monies from their victims promising to facilitate a pipeline security surveillance contract for them.

According to the court charge sheet with number Ymc/5/579, made available to Nigerian Tribune in Yenagoa, the suspects fronted as leaders of Host Communities Producing Oil and Gas (HOSTCOM) while carrying the alleged crime.

Parts of the court charge sheet reads: “sometime in 2016 at No 99 Melford Okilo road opposite Sampson Siasia sport complex Ovom Yenagoa, Mr Ikiobofa Amasamana, Timila Arthure and Osain James did conspire amongst themselves to commit felony by obtaining by false presence and there by committed an offense punishable under section 444(a) of the criminal code law cap C14 laws of Bayelsa state of Nigeria 2006.

“The above mentioned persons and one other at large was on the 28th of May 2018 in conflict resolution unit state CID in the afore said magistrate district did make false statements to the police through a petition captioned ‘Threat to life, intimidation, oppression, assault and harassment of our clients’ to the commissioner of police, Bayelsa state written by Felix Suku, Esq of P.P Apeli office knowing that assertion to be false and thereby committing an offense punishable under section 100(1) 9a) 0f the criminal code cap c14 laws of Bayelsa state 2006.

“That they also in a fraudulent intention obtained the sum of 2500 naira from one Egumime Joyful with the pretence that they were going to send him for a skilled acquisition training knowing it to be false thereby committing an offence punishable under section 346(1) of the criminal code law cap C14 laws of Bayelsa state 2006.”

Speaking to newsmen in Yenagoa, the national chairman of HOSTCOM, Chief Style Benjamin called on Bayelsans to be warry of persons using the name of HOSTCOM to promise fake contracts.

Cheif Benjamin confirmed that the suspects set including one Mike Emu from Delta state had been collecting and defrauding Bayelsans with a nonexistent oil pipeline security surveillance contract job.

Explaining further, he said “each Bayelsan caught in the web paid N68,000 to N70,000 thousand naira. They were told that they will be given a pipeline surveillance security job that they will be paid N350,000.

“They said they were collecting the money in anticipation of the contract. They said they will train them and that any time the government gives them the contract they will give them the job.In Bayelsa alone, about 3000 persons have paid and they are going out sewing paramilitary uniforms.”

However, suspects pleaded not guilty to the count charges, and at the end of court proceedings the case was adjourned to 13th of September 2018 for further hearing.
