A father of a 3-year-old child simply identified as Greg, has been allegedly shot to death by a Soldier guarding the Nigerian Correctional Service Centre, also known as Afokang Prison in Calabar South Local Government of Cross River State.

It was gathered that the incident happened at about 9 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021, at Idang Street, Calabar South.

According to sources, the soldier went to settle a beef between Greg and another youth currently struggling a girlfriend with him at the entrance of the street where he allegedly opened fire on the deceased.

“Both of them (Greg and the other civilian whose name is yet-to-be-identified) were struggling to get a particular girlfriend. We don’t know what happened, but when the army personnel arrived, one of them opened fire on the guy after a brief argument and he died at the spot.

“Today, the Idang community has mobilised and carried the corpse to the Afokang Prison calling for justice. The people of the community tried to enter the Prison yard but the security personnel guarding the prison didn’t allow them.

“The tension is growing high that the senior Prison and Army officials had to come and intervene”, a source who spoke under anonymity said.

Greg is from Biakpan in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State.

When contacted on the Phone on Saturday, ASC Effanga Etim, Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service told reporters that they are gathering reports about the incident.

“Currently, we are gathering the full story. I will get back to you with the full story, let me not speak in a vacuum”, Etim said.
