Gov. Diri grants amnesty to 9 inmates in Bayelsa Prison

“Today, we are here to carry out a constitutional duty and a duty that will add value to our society and to the people here in Okaka. I don’t believe that we should have this centre filled and congested with our brothers and sisters.

Going forward, by the powers conferred on me as the Governor of Bayelsa State, under section 212 of the Nigerian constitution, I set free the following:

“Whereas, you have all made written applications, seeking for this discretionary exercise by the Governor of Bayelsa State.”

“Whereas, I have also in consultation with the State Advisory Council on prerogative of mercy and in exercise of my constitutional powers, as the Governor of Bayelsa State, I hereby grant you mercy.”

This are the words of Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, speaking while granting pardon to nine inmates in a brief programme that had in attendance, the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice (Mrs.) Kate Abiri, President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Daniel Ayah, Secretary to the State Government, Rt.Hon. Friday Konbowei Benson, Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Benson Sunday Agadaga, and other top government functionaries, at the Okaka Correctional centre, Okaka, Yenagoa.
