Tragedy struck on Thursday morning in Benin City, Edo State, when a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered vehicle exploded at a NIPCO filling station along the Benin-Auchi Expressway.
The blast sent shockwaves through the community, with people fleeing for their lives as the vehicle was left severely damaged. A viral video circulating on social media captured the chaotic scene, showing the vehicle’s destruction and the panic that ensued.
Unfortunately, three individuals sustained injuries in the explosion and were rushed to a nearby private hospital for medical attention. The explosion raised concerns about the safety of CNG-powered vehicles, particularly since the Federal Government has been promoting their use as a cost-effective alternative to petrol-powered vehicles following the fuel subsidy removal.
NIPCO, the company involved, has been at the forefront of CNG adoption in Nigeria, with over 5,600 vehicles converted to run on CNG in Benin City alone. The company has also invested heavily in CNG infrastructure, including the construction of pipelines and compression stations.
NlPCO company is yet to issue any official statement on the explosion as at the time of filing this report.
