….As party guber candidate loses supporters to PDP

President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, met with the leadership of the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting, which had the party’s candidate for the coming governorship election, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, in attendance, was at the behest of the Presidency, which aimed at resolving disagreements in the chapter.

Although details of the discussions were still scanty at press time, an informed source at the meeting said one of the resolutions was for the running mate, Idahosa, to withdraw his litigation against the candidature of Okpebholo.

Recall that the primary election that produced Okpebholo as the candidate became controversial, as Idahosa was first declared by the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma-led committee.

The first round of primary was, however, declared inconclusive by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, owing to what it identified as irregularities.

Among those at the meeting held in the President’s office were the National Chairman of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje; Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole; Senator Matthew Urhoghide, former representative of Edo South in the Senate, among others.

Meanwhile, the political support base for Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, yesterday, received a boost as some members of the Okpebholo family of Uromi, Esan North East, Edo State, defied expectations by rallying behind Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy.

The move to support Asue Ighodalo was intensified during a visit to Bishop Matthew Okpebholo, a senior family member, just as another family member, Patrick Okpebholo, who communicated the family’s choice to newsmen, noted that Asue Ighodalo was a preferred candidate.

Patrick said the visit of the PDP candidate to the home of the bishop was a strategic move by the candidate in consolidating the chances of the party to victory ahead of the 21st September Edo governorship election.

Patrick maintained that their support underscored the family’s belief in Asue Ighodalo’s ability to steer Edo State towards prosperity and fulfilment of its potential.

He stressed that in a show of solidarity and determination, other prominent members of the family had all pledged their commitment to Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy.
