Yenagoa—Youths from the Bayelsa State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have called on the interim national chairman of the party, Governor Mai Mala Buni to broker peace between various leaders of the party in the state.

They specifically called on Buni to settle the alleged squabble between the minister of state for petroleum resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, and Chief David Lyon for the sake of unity and stability of the party.

This was contained in a communique issued by Comr. Robert Igali, Bayelsa state coordinator, APC national youth council (NYC) and coordinators of the eight local government areas, after a meeting held on Friday 6th August 2021 at the party secretariat in Yenagoa.

They also urged leaders of the party, who have reportedly taken the party to court, to put aside their differences and consider political solutions in the interest of the party.

According to the statement, social media-savvy members of the party should not take sides “but raise issues that will promote peace, encourage robust and frank discussions amongst the leaders of the party in the state to hasten the healing process of the party.”

The group accused the executive secretary of the Nigerian content development and monitoring board (NCDMB), Engr. Simbi Wabote, for showing less concern in the area of youth empowerment for youthful members of the party in the state.

They, therefore, threatened to express their displeasure by carrying out a massive protest to shut down the Nigerian content towers in Yenagoa.

The communique reads in part:

“Also on youth empowerment, the meeting resolved to set up a ten (10) man planning committee capturing the diverse interest of the party for the Bayelsa APC Youth Summit.

“The essence is for the leader of the party in the State, His Excellency, Chief Timipre Sylva and other major stakeholders to meet, interact and interface with the youths and other party stalwarts to make the party stronger, bigger and better and position the party to take over the reins of government in the State.

“In the same vein, the meeting strongly appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR and other leaders of the party to appoint a committed party man from Bayelsa State as MD of NDDC, to cater for the well-being, interest, and welfare of party men, women and especially the youths of the party, who have consistently shown unwavering support for President Buhari, without any tangible benefit from the party.

“Finally, the youths are the bulwark and constitute about seventy (70) percent of the numeric strength of the party and the youths have paid a huge price for the electoral and political successes the party has recorded in the State.

“The dominant posture of the party in the State is as a result of the youths. Very soon the party would be in another round of elections and the youths have a major role to play in the one hundred and five wards of the State and the Eight LGA’s, the youths need to be empowered and primed for the task ahead.

“This is the time for those holding sensitive positions from the State at the National and other areas to fashion out ways to support and empower the youths. Enough of the internal bickering and rumblings in the party, the time is now to put our house in order.”
