…Death of suspect in police cell

…Police condole with family, orders immediate investigation, autopsy

Yenagoa—Some indigenes of Biogbolo community in Yenagoa local government area of Bayelsa State on Saturday, staged a protest in Yenagoa over the death of one Goodluck Oviekeme who was said to have died while in police custody.

Ebitonye Michael, relative of the deceased, stated that men of the Police special squad “Operation Puff Adder” arrested Oviekeme on Wednesday over a crime he did not commit.

She alleged that Oviekeme was murdered in the police cell and his body was later dumped at the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Yenagoa.

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa state police commissioner, CP Echeng E. Echeng, has ordered a discreet autopsy and investigation into the cause of death of the deceased.

The police commissioner made this known in a statement signed by SP Asinim Butswat, police public relations officer, Bayelsa state command.

According to the statement, Oviekeme, 27, was arrested in connection to an armed robbery incident that occurred on 21 September 2021, at Biogbolo, Yenagoa, when hoodlums attacked Police Patrol team, fatally injured Inspector Ugbotor Sunday and carted away his rifle.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that Goodluck Oviekeme was the mastermind of the attack on the patrol team.

“He was arrested on 22 September 2021 at about 0300 hours, while in Police custody the suspect was observed to be running a high temperature and was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died,” the statement reads.

The police commissioner further commiserated with the family of the deceased and assured the public that findings of the investigation will be made public.
