IT was a fun-filled weekend for members of the Sagbama Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and the Bayelsa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as they slugged it out in the pools in a novelty swimming contest.

The event was part of the activities lined up to mark the 2018 end of year NBA Week for the learned fellows.

The Chairman of the state council of the NUJ, Comrade Samuel Numonengi, while declaring the contest open, called for continued collaboration between both professional bodies as it would go a long way in strengthening the camaraderie to assist in fighting their set goals.

Comrade Numonengi, who was represented by the treasurer of the state council, Mrs Joy Ifidi Okah, assured all of the council’s readiness to partner with sister associations to achieve a common course to change society for good.

Earlier in her opening address, chairperson of the Sagbama Branch of the NBA, Barrister Dise Ogbise-Ehisere appreciated all guests and members for turning up for the event and charged all to have fun as the novelty swimming contest was put together to give members some opportunity to unwind and mingle.

In her words, “who knows, some can even find love in the cause of this friendly contest. Lawyers mingling with journalists in an atmosphere of fun devoid of our usual schedules in the courts and in the press, wonderful things can happen.” She said.

Barrister Ogbise further called on both bodies not to forget their goals of uplifting society through advocacy on social issues of molestations, child abuse and other vices.

“This is another opportunity for us to highlight and reappraise our strategies on how best to reduce such social vices to the barest minimum. Let’s continue to salvage the cause to take society to a better pedestal,” she added.

The novelty swimming contests climaxed with members in a tug of pool war with five female NBA members locking horns with their NAWOJIAN counterpart in the NUJ.

Comrades, Eyal Ikisikpo, Janet Twonmute and Lady Barbara represented NAWOJ while their male counterparts Comrade Amatare Mozimo, Comrade Kenechukwu Obiajulu of the NUJ took on the male lawyers of Barrister Stanley Damabide, Barrister Azebi, Barrister Collins Boleigha and others from the NBA.
