Bayelsa Guber: Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and the troubles ahead

It is no longer a surprise that the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has invited Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Deputy Governor of the State for questioning.

This curious rendezvous is a result of Ewhrudjakpo’s alleged forgery of certificates, and spells trouble for the Deputy Governor, his executive counterpart, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Senators Douye Diri and Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo were officially inaugurated as Governor and Deputy Governor in February of 2020. This was after a long and tedious judicial process which nullified the earlier electoral results and victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) team.

Interestingly, the coffin with which that old team was ushered out forgery of certificates is the very one being delivered at Ewhrudjakpo’s door.

Technically speaking, Ewhrudjakpo’s case was in court long before he and Diri won the gubernatorial seat.

NAIJA LIVE TV Exclusively reported that, Benjamin Youdiowei, a chieftain of the APC in Bayelsa, had approached the court to report Ewhrudjakpo for forging his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) exemption letter in 1998, and then including the forged document in his nomination credentials.

Following Youdiowei’s accusation, a court in the Lugbe Area of Abuja ordered the arrest of Senator Ewhrudjakpo and consequent investigations into the matter.

But, when neither the arrest nor the investigations (both of which were expected of the Police), the State Security Service (SSS) were called in by the court to investigate everything. The inclusion of the SSS happened after Diri and Ewhrudjakpo were declared winners of the elections by the Supreme Court.

In a related development, Timipre Sylva, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, reportedly alleged that Former Deputy Governor-elect Sen. Degi was under much emotional duress, courtesy of the forgery scandal.

In fact, stated the Minister, he was on the verge of committing suicide because his integrity was at stake. Curiously, Sylva’s interference did not diffuse the situation at all, or bruise the ambition of Sen. Degi antagonists. SEE VIDEO:

The summons of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal is itself an indication that the stakes are higher than they originally appeared.

The petitioner is not calling for a reassessment of Ewhrudjakpo’s certificates out of a yearning to show that Ewhrudjakpo is without faults; that is wishful thinking. If the plans push through, the governorship of Bayelsa will be emptied of Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Douye Diri, and the PDP altogether.
