A female warder in a South African prison has been suspended after being found having sex with a male prisoner in an office.

This comes after Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesperson for the National Correctional Services, announced that a disciplinary procedure has been initiated in relation to the incident at Ncome Correctional Centre.

The prisoner’s cellphone, which was used to record the sex escapade, was discovered in the jail, according to explicit video recordings of the encounter.

On Wednesday, March 17, Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesperson for the national correctional services, told radio station 702 that if more prison officials are found guilty, they could face punishment.

According to Nxumalo, “The official involved has been dismissed, and the prisoner has been subjected to disciplinary action.

“The investigation is much broader than the two people seen on the video because… we need to know if this is just a one-off incident or if there are other players involved.”

The inquiry will look into how the two were able to walk to and into the office, as well as the sources of the cellphone, which is considered contraband in jail.

He continued,

“We don’t want them [cellphones] in our centers,” says the narrator. This is a classic case in which the recording was done with a cellphone.

“Cellphones are only one of a long list of illegal things that are prohibited because they hurt victims outside and are used to plan other crimes.” They could also order assassinations against others.

“It’s absolutely revolting. I don’t think the country deserves to see anything like that caught on camera, and you’re right, both of them were well aware they were filming it.

“Sexual encounters between prisoners and correctional officers are despicable events that can never be blamed for what our officers are supposed to do. The official involved has been confirmed and she will be subjected to a disciplinary process with immediate effect.

“Correctional officers are required to abide by a code of ethics, and despicable acts of sexual activities with inmates shall never be tolerated. We appeal to those in possession of the video to refrain from disseminating it.”

On the same Wednesday, Nxumalo told TimesLIVE that allegations made on social media about the warder killing herself were baseless.
