ADVERT RATE

An NGO, Advocacy For Good Governance has asked the caretaker committee chairman of Brass Local Government Area, Victor Isaiah, to account for the allocations that has accrued to the LGA, since he came into office. The NGO pointed out that from available records, Mr Isaiah has received about Two billion Naira (N2, 000,000, 000:00) from the Federal Government as monthly Allocations and nothing substantial can be seen to have been done with it.

According to the NGO, the 1999 Constitution, amongst others clearly defines the core functions of an LGA as follows • Encourage and support local economic activities. • Improve the delivery of services. • Promote healthy social and cultural life. • Raise the level of awareness of citizens about their community. • Provide advice and supporting people in their communal activities. • Maintain and protect public properties • Protect and improve local physical surroundings through: Garbage collection, Cleaning of drains and parapets, and Maintenance of streets;

On account of the above stated functions, the Constitution of Nigeria empowers the Federal Government (FG) to be allocating a whopping N181, 897,624.67 per month to Brass LGA. This amount is the average figure, some months Brass LGA gets more or marginally low. According to the NGO, Mr Isaiah has received up to a year or more from the Federal Government as allocations, however, he has not used this huge amount to do any tangible programmes and projects to better the lives of the people of Brass LGA.

The Advocacy For Good Governance has therefore advised the Brass, caretaker chairman to open his books for scrutiny immediately; “He should publish how these monies have been spent in a national daily to allay our fears” said the NGO.

Meanwhile, the Advocacy For Good Governance said it has decided to send petitions to the anti-graft agencies (EFCC and ICPC) on this issue. It said, this is so as to get to the root of the matter and ensure that Brass LGA is not short-changed, and if it has been short-changed, the culprit(s) be made to refund every dime misappropriated.

The NGO declared further that its next two demands will center on the fraudulent SSCE result the caretaker chairman is using and as well as the missing 1 billion naira internally generated revenue of Brass LGA, the details of which it said would be made public soon.

The NGO pointed out that its aim is not to witch-hunt the Chairman, but to hold leaders accountable at all level of governance on how our commonwealth is been spent.
