Uganda has officially been declared free of the Ebola virus, 10 weeks after confirming its first cases linked to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A total of 20 cases were confirmed in the country from May 15, following the outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
The declaration comes after 42 days passed since the last patient was discharged, meeting the World Health Organization’s requirement for declaring the end of an Ebola outbreak.
Ugandan authorities said all confirmed cases were linked to the outbreak in the eastern Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the first infected patients entering Uganda before they knew they had contracted the virus.
To contain the outbreak, the government cancelled large gatherings, discouraged handshakes, suspended public transportation and flights between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and placed all identified contacts under 21-day monitoring without recording further transmission.
