Christians all over the world celebrate Palm Sunday, which comes a week before Easter Sunday.
Here are facts that you should know about this important Christian holiday.
- Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday, as it is the first day of the Holy Week.
- It commemorates Jesus’ triumphiant entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonised gospel
- Palm Sunday is associated in some churches with the blessings and procession of palms.
- The palms are often woven into cross-like shapes and taken home by the members of the congregation to serve as momentos.
- Some of these palms are burned the following year on Shrove Tuesday to serve as the ashes for Ash Wednesday.
- The difficulty in procuring palms in some climates led to their replacement with branches of native trees, including box, olive, willow, and yew.
- That is why Palm Sunday is named after these substitute trees in those climes i.e Yew Sunday, or known by the general term, Branch Sunday.
