Christians all over the world celebrate Palm Sunday, which comes a week before Easter Sunday.

Here are facts that you should know about this important Christian holiday.

  1. Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday, as it is the first day of the Holy Week.
  2. It commemorates Jesus’ triumphiant entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonised gospel
  3. Palm Sunday is associated in some churches with the blessings and procession of palms.
  4. The palms are often woven into cross-like shapes and taken home by the members of the congregation to serve as momentos.
  5. Some of these palms are burned the following year on Shrove Tuesday to serve as the ashes for Ash Wednesday.
  6. The difficulty in procuring palms in some climates led to their replacement with branches of native trees, including box, olive, willow, and yew.
  7. That is why Palm Sunday is named after these substitute trees in those climes i.e Yew Sunday, or known by the general term, Branch Sunday.
