The Bayelsa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at the weekend concluded the conduct of the congresses to elect new executives of the party into the 105 wards in the eight local Government councils in the State.

The ward congresses, monitored in some parts of the State, was devoid of the usual acrimony, allegation of exclusion and done in a peaceful atmosphere. The Leader of the PDP National delegation for the Ward Congress,Senator James Manager had earlier called on the PDP faithfuls to show that the congress is a time for reconciliation and show love. 

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri and his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Erujiakpor joined other party faithful to participate in the ward congresses.

While Governor Douye Diri participated in the PDP Ward Congress at his Sampou-Kalama Ward 6 of Kokokuma/Opokuma local government area of the state, his Deputy,Senator Lawrence Erhujiakpor was at ward 4 in his  home town in Ofoni Federated Communities of Sagbama Local Government Area of the State to constitute new wards’ leadership.

In ward 9 and 10 of the Southern Ijaw Local Government council area of the State, the congress was done amidst fanfare among stakeholders.

Stakeholders and members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ward 10 of Amassoma in Southern Ijaw witnessed the nomination and election of PDP Ward 10 executive members.

The process of nomination and election was both transparent and peaceful and it was conducted, supervised and signed by PDP ward 10 stakeholders – Hon. Alamieyesiegha Akpoebidei, Hon. Evang. Parkins Ogede, Hon. Kate Owoko, Chief Douyi Douglas Naingba, Hon. Ogbomo Erepamowei.

Evang. Parkins Ogede, the Vice Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government council, said the peaceful nature of the congress showed that “this is a demonstration that the PDP stakeholders in SILGA Ward 10 are working together in unity and the party is very strong, firm and intact”

At ward 9, the atmosphere was the same with funfair, prayers and praises offered to for the emergence of Senator Douye Diri as Governor,” there are no interference and manipulations. All positions where returned Unopposed”.

Earlier, the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri in his assessment of the outcome of the ward congresses, noted that the peaceful posture of party faithfuls in the state is the new spirit of unity and consensus building in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has put the party in good stead to win future elections in the state.

He said the PDP which can boast of its presence and structures in the 105 wards of the state, would continue to dominate Bayelsa politics for a long time.He commended the national leadership of the PDP led by Prince Uche Secondus for conducting peaceful ward congresses across the 105 wards of the state.

He congratulated those elected to pilot the affairs of their respective ward on their emergence, charging them to discharge their duty with diligence as they are now ambassadors and representatives of the governor at the ward and state level.

According to him, the election of ward executives was a consensus and affirmation by PDP members in the ward in recognition of the role they played before and during the November 16, 2019 governorship election.

The Bayelsa Chief Executive noted that report at his disposal indicated that the ward congresses in the 105 wards of the state was general peaceful and commendable.

“I have been in touch with  key leaders of our party across the state and the report before me is that the ward congresses of our dear party are generally peaceful. That is the new spirit of the party in the state”, Diri said.

The Governor said members of the PDP who defected to the APC in the ward are set to return to the party and urged the ward leaders to accommodate them and wind up the opposition in the ward.

The governor also appreciated the Kolokuma/Opokuma PDP local government area Caucus Chairman, stakeholders, women and youths for their loyalty and commitment to the party.

In an acceptance speech, the newly elected Sampou-Kalama Ward 6 PDP chairman, James Usukoromogha on behalf other principal officers, thanked members for finding them worthy to serve. He assured the leadership of the party at the local government and state level of their total commitment and readiness to work hard to ensure PDP remains the dominant party in the area.
