The umbrella body of Ijaw Youths worldwide, the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to halt the gradual fragmentation and disunity among Nigerian along ethnic-religious lines, urging President Buhari to listen to agitations of every region in the country on self-determination, strengthened democracy and improved welfare of federating units.

The IYC, through its spokesperson, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, said though everyone are in agreement that Nigeria is far from achieving the expectations that the founding fathers of this country, the present administration should endeavor to rejuvenate a more practical and equitable policies on how to solve the alarming rates of unemployment, insecurity, poor infrastructure and poor standard of education in the country.

Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, in the IYC message in Yenagoa to mark the independent day celebration, said the political class and the present administration should take note that the pulse of the nation is not right as the people, federating units and the present administration are moving towards different directions,” But for people who are feeling the pulse of what is happening in the country, especially the common man. We are all in agreement that Nigeria is far from achieving the expectations that the founding fathers of this country.’

“And so we are very concerned, because up till this moment the basic amenities that the ordinary are yearning for is still a far cry we are still struggling with issues of unemployment we are still struggling with the issue of infrastructure. We are still struggling with the issue of education, we are still struggling with the issue of insecurity and government after government have always come up with their own policies and programs believing that all of these, will be addressed but the answer remains No”.

“I feel very worried, or the Ijaw Youths council feel very worried because this is not supposed to happen in the first place we as a regional group our interest, is to see that democracy is entrenched in this country we are looking forward to a society we are looking forward to environmental justice, we are looking forward to peace and stability”
.
“But up till this moment we are still not been able to achieve that. We are still agitating for restructuring of the country, and we believe that if the country is restructured and if every region is been given the opportunity to contribute to the central government on areas where they have competitive strength. Some of this challenges we are been faced with in this country will be a thing of the past it is also slavery unfortunate, that the country is so divided along ethnic religious lines and this is something that is very worrisome, and we don’t believe that if we continue on this part we can achieve one united Nigeria”
.
“The country, is so fragmented more than ever before you can also see the agitation from IPOB of course just fee days ago, IBOP have already given a directive to their people to sit at home to boycott the Independence Day celebration and if you may ask me, they are doing all of this things so that what they are agitating for can be addressed and they are talking about self-determination. So we as the Ijaw Youth council, our struggle is about resource control our struggle is about self-determination, our struggle is about environmental rights”

“.Our struggle, is about we controlling our God given resources and through federalism and if anybody aligns himself to this aims and objectives of the Ijaw youth council, we will always align ourselves to that person. And so to us Nigeria, sixty years is something that we are not too comfortable with because we have not been able to achieve those things that we have all desired and so going forward we are believing that the government, especially the political class would do everything within their powers for them to strengthen democracy”

“The electoral laws of this country also should be reviewed in such a way that it will give citizens the necessary tools to participate in their electoral process. And we are also using this opportunity, to call on our youths not to give up hope to Nigeria as a county. It is a country, that is progressing geometrically it is our responsibility. All of us coming together to achieve the desired results. We are believing strongly that going forward, we can harness out resources and energy together as young people we will be able to rewrite the wrongs that we have witnessed in recent past”.

“Again one of the fundamental issues that is affecting us as a region especially as Nigeria will be clocking sixty, is the issue of the political marginalization and unequitable distribution of power that is affecting our people just recently, the bill that has been completely thrown out of the national assembly has been re-introduced and that is the water resources bill. Let me use this opportunity to re instate the position of the Ijaw youth council that that bill is against the people, that bill is programmed to advance a particular section of this country”.

“And so those of us from the Niger delta we are to feel the brunt of that bill because if we are talking about water resources, it is the Niger delta people and the South-South region that owns water most parts if the north don’t have water what they have, is dam so our question has been that at this moment the timing is very wrong for you to introduce the water resources bill , when the country is still struggling with the issues of unemployment , the country is still struggling with the problems of insecurity, the Boko haram insurgency and the fulani herdsmen and mandatory that is currently ravaging the entire country”.

“This is a government that promised Nigerians that they are going to strengthen our electoral laws, they are going to ensure that corruption is been reduced to the barest minimum, they are going to fight insecurity but as we speak up till this moment, none of this things have been achieved going by the records . Nigeria as a country, is still facing so many challenges so for the political class they see this as an opportunity to keep celebrating their loots, when the vast majority of the Nigerian population are still wallowing in abject poverty.”

“Don’t forget that just recently the country they don’t put the ordinary citizens of this country into consideration, if not why would you at this point in time when we are just coming out or when we have not come out completely from the recent covid-19 pandemic that ravage the entire country that has also rendered a lot of people poor and you are now introducing bills and trying to bring in policies that will further add to the sufferings of what they are currently going through.
