• Italian man working in Nigeria flew into the country on February 25 and travelled from Lagos to Ogun. Two days later, on February 27, he tested positive for coronavirus. He became the index case for Covid-19, the first case of the disease, in Nigeria.
• A total of 217 contacts were linked to the index case. Of the 217, 45 travelled out of Nigeria and 172 are presently in Nigeria. Of the 172 contacts currently in Nigeria, 69 are in Lagos, 40 in Ogun and 52 in other States, with 11 in unknown locations.
• On March 8, a man who had travelled with the Italian to Ogun state tested positive for coronavirus. He became case Number 2.
• On March 13, a woman in her 30s returned from the UK and went into the recommended 14-day self isolation. Three days into the isolation, she developed a fever and cough. She tested positive, becoming the third case of Covid-19.
• On March 18, officials confirmed five new cases of Covid-19 within 36 hours, bringing the total to 8.
• Of the five, three arrived from the US—including a mother and her six-week-old child. The child is the youngest Covid-19 patient on record in Nigeria. The third patient is an American who crossed land border, thus the first Covid-19 that did not arrive by air.
• The remaining two of the five are Nigerians.
• On March 21, a total 10 new cases were confirmed–seven in Lagos and three in the FCT. Nine of the 10 had travel history outside Nigeria in the previous week before the confirmation. The 10th case is a close contact of a confirmed one.
• On March 22, another three cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Lagos, bringing the country’s total to 25. All three had travel history to high-risk countries in the preceding seven days.
• Two hours later, another case was confirmed in Oyo, bringing the total to 26.
• Three hours after the 26th cases, another case was confirmed in the FCT, making 27.
• By evening of March 22, three new cases were confirmed in Lagos, totalling 30.
• On the morning of March 23, NCDC reported five new cases–two in FCT, two in Lagos and one in Edo. The total stood at 35.
• Shortly after, NCDC announced the first Covid-19 deaths, a 67-year-old male, returning following medical treatment in the UK. He had underlying medical conditions, multiple myeloma and diabetes and was undergoing chemotherapy.
