JUST IN: Rowdy session In Senate As Ike Ekweremadu Object To Buhari’s Appointments

The Senate on Thursday plenary went in to a rowdy session as Senate President read the letter from the President and the commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, of the new appointment list send to the Senate for consideration.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy President of the Senate representing Enugu West drawn the attention of the Senate to the imbalance nature of the the appointment by Mr President.

He stand on Senate order 14(3) to express his personal feeling that the appointment of Mr. President did not follow the due process as laid down by Federal Character Commission.

He lamented that in the past appointment it is only one side of the country that benefit from it . He said “even FERMA and Federal Civil Service Commission headed by the Northerners, why?”.

He mentioned that “in true federalism any appointment made by Mr. President is expected to go round the country so that everyone can benefit equally”.

Accordingly, Senator Utazi Chukwuma (Enugu North) challenges the list of Mr. President that it doesn’t reflect the true Federal Character Commission status, therefore there is no true federalism.

He further cited the recent list from Mr. President for FERMA and the Commissioner of Federal Civil Service Commission with Chairmen from the North including the past appointment, “it is improper” ., he lamented.

Utazi urged the Senate to put on hold any exercise on Mr. President’s until the clarification from the Federal Civil Service Commission before they can proceed with the confirmation.
Senator Obina Ogba representing Ebonyi Central, spoke on the fact that Ebonyi State is outrightly denying of any federal appointment of the federal government as if the state is not part of Nigeria.

“I support the stepping down on the confirmation until the out come of the Federal Character Commission reports because this attitude is injustice to some parts of the country”. He said.

President of the Senate Dr. Bukola Saraki Urges the Senate to remain silent as the letter from Mr. President based on screening before confirmation, while waiting for Federal Character Commission it is important for the Committee to go ahead in screening.

Meenwhile, Senate resolved to step down the appointment of FERMA board members and ask the committee on establishment to commence the screening of the Commissioners pending the outcome of the report from Federal Character Commission.
