The breakout mirrors the tragedy that befell the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the lead-up to the 2015 election, when five governors led other bigwigs out of the party in 2013, first to form the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) before joining other parties to form the APC.

A breakaway faction has emerged from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to form a group that will be known as the Reformed All Progressives Congress (RAPC).
