Hired thugs alleged to have been hired by some Chieftains of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday afternoon invaded a campaign rally organised by the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Tungbobiri community of Sagbama Local Government Area, killing one person and injuring sixteen others.
The injured persons were reportedly stabbed while running for their dear lives while the APC loyalist was shot dead.
He is identified as as Brave Embikoro.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday at a campaign rally organised by the APC for its Bayelsa West Senatorial candidate, Captain Karimu at Tungbobiri community area of the Governor Seriake Dickson council of Sagbama local Government area.
Some loyalists of the APC alleged that the attack was sponsored by the PDP and is in alleged retalitaion of the incident which occurred during the rally of the PDP for Bayelsa Central Candidates at Famgbe Community in Yenagoa local Government area of the state.
Leadership gathered that the suspected political thugs invaded the venue of the rally and unleashed terror on the gathering while the Senatorial candidate, Capt.Mathew Karimu was about to deliver his speech.
Already, it was gathered the violent attack has provoked violent reactions with houses of members of the ruling party and opposition party are being set ablaze.
The Secetary of the APC, Alabo Martin’s, in a short statement on the incident, accused the PDP Senatorial Candidate, Engr. Lawrence Erujiakpor And his House of Assembly counterpart of alleged sponsorship of the attack.
According to Alabo Martin’s, ” A party member was killed in Bayelsa West senatorial Campaign today in Tungbo Abiri in Sagbama local government area of the state..APC Senatorial candidate, Capt. Mathew Karimo had gone on a political campaign at that community where PDP senatorial candidate and House of Assembly candidate came with their thugs , in their numbers, shooting sporadically and scattered the arena.”
“Cars were destroyed, Music Sound system and canopies we’re vandalised. Three party faithfuls were shot. Presently one out of the three, is confirmed dead.We use this medium to appealed to the general public for urgent intervention and rescue our supporters from further attacks by the PDP Government of the day and their tugs please.”
Other members of the APC in Brass and Yenagoa Local Government areas of the state also alleged that the ruling party of the PDP in the state have strated laying grounds for violence with the recent attack and destruction of the home of the Federal House of Representatives candidatefor Nembe/Brass Federal constituency in the state, Hon. Isreal Sunny-Goli.
” His house was destroyed beyond recognition and his supporters in Twon Brass intimidated with illegal arrest. We are also concerned the Gov.Dickson ,who is from the violent Sagbama council, has decided to lead the PDP campaign to Brass on Monday.Thia is another way to confirm the destruction carried out by his Messengers.”
The spokesperson of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, stated that one person have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Butswat, in a statement late yesterday,stated that ‘On 2nd February, 2019, at about 1530hours, thugs disrupted APC campaign rally at Tungbabiri, Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. ”
“The thugs numbering about 15 disrupted and attacked APC party faithfuls at a Political rally at Tungbabiri. In the ensuing melee, one Braye Embikorobiri of Tungbabiri Community sustained critical injuries and later died. Two other victims, names yet unknown were critically injured and are responding to treatment in the hospital.”
“One suspect, Isaac Abrowei ‘m’ 42 years, from Bolou-Orua, but resident at Tungbabiri has been arrested, the thugs who master mind the act and their alledge sponsor have been identified and the Police has launched a manhunt to arrest them. ”
“The command has mobilize officers to restore normalcy in the community and efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects. ”
It would recalled that the former Governor of the State and leader of the APC, Chief Timipre Sylva had last weekend led a protest to the state police command against alleged intimidation of his party members in the state by suspected loyalists of the Bayelsa State Governor, Hon.Seriake Dickson.
