A socio-political group, ‘The Old Associates’ has welcome with immense relief the release and safe return of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, who was abducted in Yenagoa by unknown gunmen.
In a statement signed by Dr. Evans Ogoun, Pst. John Okhai, Hon. Tamaratare Otis, Engr. Gift Omonibo and Hon. Alasuonyo Mathias, the group thank all relevant security agencies for securing the release of the Bayelsa High Court Judge.
“We are grateful to God for sparing his life and we wish to reiterate our firm solidarity with his family and loved ones who have undergone tremendous trauma during his time with his captors, as they begin the process of healing from that nerve-racking ordeal.”
“While we rejoice at his safe return, we shall not lose sight of the broader implications of this sordid and brazen act. The abduction of a judicial officer in such a brazen and unlawful manner reflects a troubling lapse in security and law enforcement in Bayelsa State. It is unacceptable that residents would be at the mercy of armed men.”
“For a personality like Justice Omukoro to have been so easily targeted and kept for so long with his abductors speaks volumes about the deterioration of security in Bayelsa State.”
“It is against this background that we once again, demand a thorough investigation to unravel the masterminds of the abduction to bring them to justice.”
“While we commend all relevant security agencies for their thankless job of securing the populace, we wish to implore them not to relent in their efforts to end the cycle of criminality in the state.”
“We also reiterate our appeal to His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri, to take decisive and lasting measures to ensure the security of lives and properties across the state. This includes ensuring proper funding and coordination of the security architecture and improving intelligence gathering, to restore public confidence in the state’s ability to protect its residents.”
“The Old Associates remain committed to advocating for justice, security, and the rule of law. We urge Bayelsans to stay vigilant, united, and supportive of efforts to keep our communities safe.”
