The Bayelsa State Government has commended Bayelsans for coming out in their numbers to vote in the just concluded Local Council elections which took place on Saturday across the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson said in a statement in Yenagoa that the large turn out witnessed in the eight local government area is a clear testament of the confidence of electorate‘s/voters in the credibility of the process as instituted by BYSEIC.

He commended BYSIEC for organizing a credible, peaceful and organized local council polls, which he said can be adjudged as the most credible elections since the creation of the state.

According to him, the election has clearly set a high standard and benchmark for INEC ahead of the November 16th governorship election and the national electoral body must not dash the hopes of the people for a credible poll.

Iworiso-Markson noted that as a government they are very proud of BYSIEC for the feat and congratulated all Bayelsans for proving to the world that democracy is alive in the state and that things can be done right given the right environment.

The Government spokesman also commended Governor Henry Seriake Dickson for instituting a New Democratic culture in the state and raising the bar so high for others to emulate.

While stressing on the new democratic culture, the Information Commissioner added that Governor Dickson’s political astuteness, as a politician of conviction, has written his name in gold.

He further added that by opening up the democratic space for all those with governorship aspirations to freely express their ambition to contest without a preferred candidate clearly shows the kind of leader he is and the reason why the people have continued to stand by him in the last seven and half years.

Iworiso-Markson reminded Bayelsans that they have a date with history and they must do well to ensure that they are on the right side of history when November 16 comes.

He said that can only be possible if they elect the right successor to Governor Dickson whose emergence will have a positive effect on them and the state.

The Information Commissioner further added that such a person must have the competence and capacity to deliver and therefore the people must insist on engaging the aspirants, listen and scruntinize all of them to ensure they have such qualities that will bring about a greater Bayelsa.

“Such engagement will make them have informed decisions on who that person is. At this crirical period of our development what we need is a principled, bold and courageous leader to protect the collective interest of the Ijaw nation and this point has beeb made severally by Governor Dickson.

“The issues are too clear for our understanding and appreciation of our current situation in the midst of struggle to dominate the smaller ethnic groups by the larger ones. And the struggle had been a long one.

“So in this regard, the next governor of the Ijaw nation must necessarily be courageous and ready to defend the Ijaw nation at all times without pandering to political whims or external influence or without being able to take decisive position on issues”.
