Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri has described the Late George Allen Fente as a political colossus who will be remembered for his numerous contributions to the evolution of the state.

He said Fente over the years helped to mentor young politicians some of whom are doing well in different leadership positions and making the state proud.

Diri spoke in Yenagoa, when he visited the family of the late political mogul who passed on in April 2020 after a brief illness suspected to be kidney related at the age of 71.

“I stand here with nostalgia because leading to my elections, the late George Fente, received me right here in this room. I came here to persuade him to be part of our team.

“In building his political career, George Fente, has fathered so many politicians from old Rivers State. He’s been not only a father, he’s been a political mentor to several politicians in Old Rivers State even before Bayelsa was created. And upon creation, he came down here and owned up the state and continued his business, the politics that he had started from Old Rivers State, and added value to the political climate of Bayelsa State.
“George Fente has been a very senior political associate to me, he has been a friend and a brother”, he said.

The governor urged Bayelsans, particularly politicians to eschew every form of bitterness amongst themselves, stressing that such attitude has slowed down for many years the growth of the state.

“I want to say today that we didn’t create Bayelsa State to be enemies, politics shouldn’t divide us to the point of loosing very valid fathers, sisters, brothers, and friends like George Fente. We have no other place to go, this is our only state. APC and PDP will come and go, even if they remain, Bayelsa will remain our only home. We will remain as Ijaw people.

And so, I call on all of us to see politics more as service for development, and not an end in itself”.
The remains of the late Fente, an influential politician and former Special Adviser on Political Matters to former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva was on Saturday laid to rest in his hometown, Opu-Nembe in Nembe Local Government Area of the state.

Dignitaries at the funeral service include, Timipre Sylva, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieyo, the lawmaker representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District, Isreal Sunny-Goli, the member representing Nembe/Brass Federal Constituency, representatives of Governor Douye Diri, members of the state assembly, among others.
