Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the special counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has raised the alarm over a father of five children, Chidiebere Echefu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) for over three years without charge.

Ejimakor said that Echefu had been detained by DSS in Abuja since November 2021 without charge, stressing that his detention has subjected his wife and five children to undue suffering.

According to Ejimakor, Echefu who is a native of Umuogbuanu Umucheke Okwe in Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, was “abducted” by the DSS operatives from his residence at No. 13, Arch Dcn. Denis Street, opposite Assemblies of God Church Ikenegbu, Owerri Imo State capital, on November 7, 2021, at about 3:25am.

Echefu was detained alongside eight others including one Ebere Agbata, Uchenna Nwoha, Sunday Nwokeji, Nzube Okonkwo, Ugonna Obiajuru, Uchenna Okonkwo, Christian Ohazurume and Victor Okolie.

“This is an appeal to DG SSS (Mr. Adeola Ajayi) to free this young man (CHIDIEBERE LUKE ECHEFU) who has been detained by DSS in Abuja since Nov. 2021 (over 3 years) without charge.

“I filed Suits to free him but DSS is resisting. This man has a wife & 5 children who have suffered,” Ejimakor said.

In a suit marked: M/5578/2024, dated March 18, 2024 and filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Ejimakor prayed the court for “A declaration that the continuous detention of the applicants as illegal, unlawful, null and void and a violation of the Applicant’s rights.

“An Order of this Honourable court mandating and directing the Respondents to release the Applicants unconditionally.

“An Order that the Respondents pay to the Applicants the sum of Ten Million Naira (N10,000,000.00) only each being compensation for unlawful/illegal detention.”

Ejimakor told Reporters that DSS was not only resisting his suit but has vehemently continued to detain Echefu without charge for over three years while his family languish in the absence of their father.

He called on the DSS Director-General, Mr. Adeola Ajayi, to unconditionally and immediately release Echefu from detention.
