…. it is most unfortunate — IYC

The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Uche Anozia, yesterday visited the two victims of police indiscriminate shooting along the Ekeki area of Yenagoa, the State capital, ordering the arrest of the trigger happy Mobile Policeman on charges of suspicion of discreditable conduct and unlawful Use of his Firearm.

Just as the authorities of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) dismissed the report that the two victims, Daniel Ogwu, Bus driver (46years) and Nnabuchi Onyebuchi, a Nairabet agent,19years, were dead, insisting that the victims are alive and responding to treatment.

The Police Commissioner, Uche Anozia, after a sympathetic visit to the victims, described the incident as unfortunate, ”The incident on 6th January, 2020 when a PMF personnel on duty in a leading commercial bank, Fidelity Bank in Yenagoa had an altercation with a driver of a commercial bus over parking rights. In the ensuing argument, the policeman allegedly pulled the trigger of his rifle injuring the driver and one other occupant of the bus”.

Anozia said he responded to the incident by deploying personnel to evacuated and rushed the victims to the hospital and they are currently responding to treatment, expressing his sympathy with the injured victims, family and friends, he has equally promised that the case will be comprehensively, speedily and conclusively investigated, and all indicted persons brought to justice. The Commissioner also denied the death of a Corps member in the incident.

Miss Vivian NNabuchi, the sister to the 19 years old victim, expressed concern over the incident and called on the Nigerian Police Force, the management of the Fidelity Bank and the general public to assist the family in the treatment of their brother, ”he is alive but in a critical condition. We are afraid that the bullet may have damaged some parts of his head.”

Meanwhile, The zonal Chairman, Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Kennedy Olrogun, while reacting to the incident described it as most unfortunate.

According to him, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, has been duly informed of the sad incidence, adding that when the conditions of the victims have been ascertained, all necessary legal actions would follow.

He confirmed that before his arrival at the crime scene, while the police officer had run away, his victims had also been rushed to the Emergency Ward of the Federal Medical Center, FMC, Yenagoa for immediate medical attention.

According to eye witnesses’ accounts, the bus driver did not commit any offense that made him deserve of any form of brutality. The sources revealed that, the bus was close to the gate of the bank, and would not have stopped had a tricycle driver not obstructed its movement.

They said, as the bus driver could not readily move off the vicinity, the officer angrily approached and commanded him to submit the key to him, adding that as the driver refused, he cocked his gun and shot him point blank, and released another shot at the Youth Corps member in the bus.

A concerned citizen, who pleaded anonymity, revealed that, haven just returned from FMC, the chances of survival of the victims is very slim, adding that frantic efforts were being made to effect blood transfusion.
