Corps members serving in Bayelsa State have marked the 50th year anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a unity rally through Yenagoa, the State capital.

According to the Corps members, despite the challenges facing the NYSC scheme over the years, the scheme has remained the champion of national unity, integration and development.

The Peace rally, which was kicked off at the Peace Park in Yenagoa to mark 50th anniversary celebration nation – wide, witnessed staff and corps members from the state joyfully commending the scheme for it’s achievements over the years.

Flagging off the rally at the Peace Park, opposite Government House Yenagoa, the State Coordinator, Mrs Okpalifo Obiageli Charity said the event was part of programmes put together by the Directorate Headquarters to celebrate the scheme.

According to her, the theme – NYSC : Five Decades of Fostering National Unity and Integration – was apt as the Scheme was established on 22ND May, 1973.

She emphasised that the Service Corps has remained the champion of national unity and integration. She enjoined the corps members to uphold the virtues, values and ideals of the NYSC.

She also pointed out that the Service Corps since inception has provided quality service to the nation in all sectors of the economy.

She noted the contribution of the corps members in the educational, health, infrastructural and agricultural sectors in the past fifty years and scored the Scheme very high in national development.

She expressed delight that through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), corps members have impacted their host communities, become more self – reliant and have become job creators instead of job seekers.

In the area of rural health, she said the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers ( HIRD) programme has benefitted most rural dwellers who had no resources and access to heath care facilities.

In the area of community development, she opined that corps members via the personal and group Community Development Service (CDS) projects have impacted on their host communities.

She insisted that there is hardly any community one cannot find a developmental project embarked upon by corps members.

The State Coordinator pointed out that There are many inter – tribal marriages that have continued to promote national unity and integration as well as cultural and religious tolerance.

She charged the corps members to be good ambassadors of the NYSC. She asked them what the people will say about the Scheme in the next fifty years as a result of their input today.

She further said that the participation of corps members in general and state elections has added credibility to the electoral process.
Sensitization about national and international programmes like Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs), U -Report and many others have been taken to the grass root by corps members.

She commended all ex – corps members who have served in the past fifty years and prayed for the repose it the souls of both serving and ex – corps members who have lost their lives within the period.

NYSC Staff who participated in the rally thanked God for the opportunity to work with the Service Corps and enjoined all stalk holders to support the Scheme to achieve its aims and objectives.

The Corps Liaison Officer ( CLO) Yenagoa, corps member Ogugua Clinton Chidera – BY/22B/2207, who spoke on behalf of the corps members, expressed happiness that they are part of this historic event marking the 50TH Anniversary of the NYSC and assured that they will continue to serve under the sun or in the rain.
