An angry mob at the early hours of today in Amarata suburb of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital on Monday night chased a four armed robbery gang after dispossessing customers of a popular supermarket of their valuables, leading to the killing of one member of the robbery gang.

The dead member of the robbery gang , identified as the driver of the getaway trycyle popularly known as” Keke NAPEP”, was shot in the back by one of his colleague while attempting to shoot at the mob chasing them.

Leadership gathered that the four man robbery gang had, at about 9pm arrived at the popular supermarket located along the Imgbi road, raiding the few customers present by collecting mobile phones and emptying the money realised from sales for the day.

But the operation started going wrong when some observant youths, seated across the supermarket, noticed their exit and started throwing bottles at the robbers despite their scary gun shots.

An eyewitness, told leadership that through the owner of the supermarket, One Chinedu, was not present at time of the robbery, but the mobile phone of his wife was unplugged and taken away with five other mobile phones collected from customers with some unspecified amount. ”

It was also gathered that despite the two gun shots fired by the fleeing robbers,the angry mob chased after them and it caused the fleeing tricycle to collide with a stationary car along the street.

“in the process of colliding with the car, the knee napep tumbled and we heated another gunshot. Later we discovered that one of the robbers loaded gun went off and hit the tricycle driver on the back. ”

It also gathered that the three of the robbers escaped, while the tricycle driver attempt to escape with gunshot wound was frustrated by the angry mob, “he was chased to the back of first bank and handed to the police. ”

The Chairman of the Bayelsa State Vigilante service, Envageslist Parkinson Ekide and the State Police Public Relations Officer, , DSP Asinim Butswat confirmed the development.

Meanwhile the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph G. Mukan yesterday held a consultative meeting with the leadership of the State Vigilante Service and the State Bayelsa Volunteer force over the rising cases of cult killings and armed robbery incidents.

Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph G. Mukan,assures the youths of a new order in the operations of the police command in the state with needed protection to the identity of those that supply information to the police and the diligent prosecution of those caught with firearms and involved in violent crimes.

Police Commissioner, Mukan, expressed concern over the quick release of arrested suspects from police custody,”it is disheartening to hear that suspects caught will be on the streets under 24hours. Such act not be condone except they are released by the court. Our approach will be total. ”
