FORMER Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao Akala has announced his non-participation in Sunday’s primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Alao Akala, who spoke with Nigerian Tribune, hinged his decision on plans perfected by Governor Abiola Ajimobi to tailor the primaries in favour of one of the aspirants, Mr Olasukanmi Tegbe.

Speaking further, he warned that the purported imposition of Tegbe as the party’s candidate may spell doom for the fortunes of the APC in the state.

Alao Akala added that he did not step down for any aspirant, noting that he will disclose his subsequent political plans in the coming days.

“He (Ajimobi) is trying to impose Tegbe, who is not known in the politics of Oyo state to be the candidate of the party. He is also coercing all other delegates to vote for Tegbe and that is why I am not participating in tomorrow’s primaries.

“It has been tailored to impose a particular aspirant, Tegbe, on the party. That is the beginning of the end of APC in Oyo state if they carry on with their plan tomorrow (Sunday). I will not be there. You will know my next plans later,” Alao Akala said.

Reacting, Governor Abiola Ajimobi described as unfortunate Alao Akala’s decision to boycott the APC primaries, noting that Alao Akala was party to an agreement to support whichever aspirant emerges the party’s candidate.

Ajimobi who spoke through his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Mr Bolaji Tunji, added that Alao Akala’s allegation of him imposing an aspirant on delegates was surprising.

“Governor Alao Akala is a highly respected member of the APC and it is surprising and unfortunate that he made that statement to boycott the primaries. He is one of the major factors that helped to unify the party. During the meeting of governorship aspirants with the party leadership, the party admonished the aspirants to pick three among them that will go for the primaries.

“He was a signatory to the agreement that was reached when the aspirants could not agree on the three. In the agreement, they promised to support whichever aspirant emerges candidate.

“The governor has always said he does not have a particular aspirant and that anyone that emerges candidate will do very well because all the aspirants are accomplished. When they could not agree on three aspirants, the governor said that the party will pick three aspirants for them and they signed an agreement to support whoever the party picks. Alao Akala was a signatory to that agreement so saying that the governor is trying to impose is rather unfortunate,” Ajimobi said.
