Content creator Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, popularly known as Jarvis, has questioned whether the punishment for bigamy under Nigeria’s Marriage Act applies equally to men and women.
Her reaction came a day after a video from her civil wedding to fellow TikToker Hamzat Habeeb, popularly known as Peller, resurfaced online.
In the video, the marriage registrar informed the couple that contracting another marriage while legally married constitutes the offense of bigamy, punishable by a minimum of five years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.
Reacting in a trending video, Jarvis said she reconsidered the warning after watching the clip again and wondered whether the penalty applied to both spouses or only to men. She ended her remarks by expressing hope that nothing of the sort would happen.
