NO fewer than 30 people were seriously injured in Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo state, when the campaign train of the lawmaker representing Ondo North Senatorial district, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, was allegedly attacked by hoodlums suspected political thugs who are loyal to a faction of the party in the state.
The lawmaker and his supporters were said to have visited Owo town in continuation of his political campaign across the wards in the senatorial districts ahead of the party’s primary when the incident happened.
It was gathered that some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the town had invaded the venue of the campaign at Raheem Event Center, warning the lawmaker not to campaign in the town.
According to a source, the lawmaker failed to heed to the threat of the hoodlums who then attacked members of the campaign train, injuring many party faithful who were members of the party.
Confirming the attack, the media aide to the lawmaker, Mr Kayode Fakuyi, explained that the hoodlums invaded the venue of the campaign, attacking members of the campaign train and supporters who were at the venue of the event at Raheem Event Center, Owo.
According to him, live ammunition, matchets, axes and stones were freely used during the attack, saying some party faithful who peacefully gathered for the campaign were injured.
He, however, disclosed that the Senator escaped unhurt from the venue of the campaign saying the hoodlums attempted to assassinate Boroffice.
He said “Senator Boroffice was attacked by armed thugs in Owo, at the venue of the campaign in Raheem’s Hall. He was attacked by armed thugs while the assailants freely unleashed ranging degrees and forms of violence on the people who gathered at the venue.
“Evidently, it was a clear assassination attempt. The senator escaped the assassination attempt by providence.”
The State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr Alex Kalejaye, also confirmed the incident, saying some aggrieved members of the party in the town invaded the venue of the campaign, ordering Boroffice out of the town.
He however said, some aides of the lawmaker were angered by the development and tried to force the men out of the hall while the security men of the lawmaker started shooting sporadically.
He said “I gathered that while Senator Ajayi Boroffice was addressing people at the Raheem Place Event Centre, in Owo, some people suspected to be aggrieved members of the town stormed the place and forced him to end his speech.
“Angered by the development, the Senator’s bodyguards, numbering over 40, was said to have started shooting indiscriminately at Ile Olisa Mokun and Oponsun areas.
“I further gathered that no lives were lost in the fracas that broke out shortly after the Senator left the town.”
However, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mr Femi Joseph, said the command was not aware of the attack, saying no case of assassination attempt was reported at the command.
He called on politicians in the state to learn to play the game by the rules, urging them not disturb the peace being enjoyed by the people of the state.
He said the command would not hesitate to arrest any politician who foments trouble in the state.
