Following a promise made by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the Adamawa State government has commenced the payment of a N70,000 minimum wage to workers in the state.
The Adamawa governor initiated the payment of the new minimum wage for state workers, starting from August 2024, with a promise that local government workers will begin receiving the increased salary in September.
On August 19, 2024, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri approved the payment of the N70,000 national minimum wage to workers on both state and local government payrolls.
The implementation of the new minimum wage has been hailed as a significant achievement for the Fintiri administration, which has been nicknamed the “Fresh Air Government” by its supporters.
A cross-section of civil servants, in interviews after receiving their August salaries, commended Governor Fintiri for keeping his promise to the workers.
However, many governors have said they can not pay N70,000 minimum wage as a result of economic reality.
With this gesture, Adamawa State became the first state to pay the N70,000 minimum wage since it was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.
