Women on the platform of Women in Politics Forum (WIPF) and Coalition of Women in Governance have reiterated their call to President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that Women are given 50 per Cent Appointive representation in the new cabinet.

Convener, Women in Politics Forum, Ebere Ifendu made the call while briefing the media in Abuja.

According to Ifendu “Mr. President Sir, it is a fact that Nigeria does not lack in quality and quantity, women who have proven themselves both as national and global resource in all spheres of endeavor, these women should be given a chance to serve this nation.

“We are on this note strongly demanding that Hon. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, a woman of cognate and eminent experience, a fourth term returnee to the House of representative should be given all the support to emerge as SPEAKER of the House of Representatives in the 9th Assembly”

“We also advocate for Hon. Khadija Bukar, also a fourth term returnee as a principal officer of the House of Representatives and all other female ranking members of the national assembly be appointed as principal officers and in cabinet formation, women who excelled like Sharon Ikeazor and others should be considered”.

Ms Ifendu further called on the President in his visionary leadership to redeem his pledge to the women by implementing the 35% Affirmative action policy as promised for the actualization of his next level agenda.

“Mr. President can go further by following the global trend of 50/50 as practiced by South Africa, Rwanda and the rest” she said

The Women while congratulating Mr. President on his recent inauguration into office as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for a second term noted that his re-election was a show of the quantum of faith reposed on him by Nigerians, especially Nigerian women.

“We wish to further use this medium on behalf of Nigerian Women to reiterate our support for Mr. President and remind him of his promise to implement the 35% affirmative Action policy, a promise he made to the women at the Aspirant’s Advocacy Summit, August 30th 2018”.

The Women noted that though the elections had come and gone, Nigerian women – millions of which voted for President Buhari yet a second time, women across ethnic, religious, social and cultural divide are sadden by the stark reality of the poor representation of women across board, in all elective offices despite concerted efforts to achieve the 35% Affirmative Action.

“It is our fear that with this trend of low participation and emergence of women in both elective and appointive positions, Nigeria’s democratic and economic flight will be hindered like the proverbial one winged-bird, a situation we greatly hope you will redeem and thereby strengthen the confidence of Nigerian women and also place Nigeria in its proper place as the Giant of Africa.

To restate the abysmal figures of female politicians that emerged in the just concluded general elections which described as a horrendous exercise Mrs Ifendu stated that among those elected were “7 elected female senators out of a Senate of 109, 11 elected female members of the House of representatives out of a House of 360, 0 elected female governor out of 36 States, 4 female deputy governors out of 36 deputy governors and 40 elected female politicians in the state assemblies. Making a total of 65 elected female politicians out of an unprecedented number of 2,970 candidates.”
