Why I Did Not Sack Unqualified Teachers – Niger Gov

Niger State governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, has stated that despite the discovery that 60 per cent of teachers of public primary schools in the state lack the requisite qualifications to teach in the schools across the 25 local governments of the state, he will not sack them but retrain them.
He made this known yesterday at the Niger State Teachers Professional Develepment Institute’s Maiden end of the year Academic Day Programme at Mararaban Dandaudu while adding that the idea behind the the institute was to train teachers .
“We will not sack these unqualified teachers, but, we will retrain those that are trainable and those we cannot train will be asked to go back to school,”the governor declared.
According to him , to ensure qualitative education and improve the teaching pedagogy, the teaching profession should be regulated, “until a teacher is certificated, he or she will not be allowed to teach.”
“With the current condition especially in boarding schools, there is no way, we can produce good future as these children will feel we did not take good care of them. That is why, we must try to give them some level of comfort.”
While commending the Committee of the teachers institute led by Hajiya Dije Bala, the governor disclosed that plans by his administration was underway to set up additional centers in Agaie and Borgu to improve the quality of teachers
Also speaking , the state commissioner for Education, Hajiya Fatima Madugu, in her address commended the Governor Bello’s administration for its commitment to the education sector, particularly, the Whole School Approach Initiative.
