(WHO THE LEGISLATOR IS NOT)

~Abel Ifiemi~

I want to sincerely appreciate all my readers on this platform and those who have been posting very encouraging and positive views on this subject, even as I bring to you yet another piece expressing my opinion on why our dynamic and people’s welfare-oriented lawmaker, Hon. Ebi Ben Ololo, should return to the sacred floor of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly come 2019.

Upon our return to democratic governance some years back, we have, as a country, practiced what is called the Presidential System of government, which clearly delineates the powers, functions and responsibilities of each organ of government – the Executive, Legislature, and the Judiciary. As it were, the laws of the land clearly stipulate the statutory duties, responsibilities and functions of each organ for the ultimate attainment of an egalitarian Nigerian sociey.

Let me not bore you further with the intricacies of the constitutional appertunances of these three key arms of government. However, I would wish to ask who a legislator truely is.

The Wikipedia defines a legislator (or lawmaker) as a person who writes and passes laws, especially someone who is a member of a legislature. Understandably, the legislator is primarily a lawmaker. Nevertheless, he is not an executive that wields executive powers, with eleven-digit budgets at his disposal to carry out capital projects in society.

Saying this, one is by no means using this piece to exonerate or plead an alibi for non-performing lawmakers who habitually “abandon” their constituencies and constituents, only to return on the eve of electioneering and political campaigns to do window-dressing and settlement of aggrieved parties, groups and interests all in a bid to buy support and votes.

It is, therefore, remarkable that in Bayelsa State, the people of the Nembe Constituency 1 can boldly assert that their representative in the last three years at the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. Ebi Ben Ololo, has creditably given a good account of himself as a rounded representative, dexterously assuming his duties as a lawmaker with the consciousness that he bears the mandate of his people on his shoulders. This he has amply demonstrated by relating effectively and directly with his constituents, as part his oversight functions.

Besides making good laws for the people, which of course is the primary duty of a member of the Parliament, the bulk of his oversight functions relates with issues of particular concern to his constituents, general security, good governance and emergency situations that may arise and which rightly demands the attention, concern and intervention of the legislature. A good lawmaker, as a good leader, shares in the burden of his people. This is one area Hon. Ebi Ben Ololo is simply outstanding because he has severally used his office as lawmaker to positively touch so many lives in not only his Nembe Constituency 1 but in the entire Nembe LGA and beyond.

This is why there is a mushrooming grassroots demand for his reelection into the Bayelsa State House of Assembly in 2019 to enable him to continue with his humanistic, good works on that platform of public service.
