
It was a hectic day for traders, motorists and commuters on the ever busy East west road as many were trapped the whole yesterday, as protesting Ijaw youths occupied the road to register their displeasure over the derogatory statements by the Minster of the FCT. Barr Nyesom Wike describing the Ijaws as minority in the Niger Delta region.
The protest by hundreds the youths, under the umbrella of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), took over the Mbiama Axis of the East-West road in a peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction over recent political developments in Rivers State.
The protest which paralyzed commercial and vehicular activities at the popular road, they said was a demonstration in response to comments made by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which the protesters describe as insulting to the Ijaw Nation
The peaceful demonstration saw leaders from various IYC zones and national officers demanding President Tinubu to caution the minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike over the recent political developments in rivers state.
The protesters berated the Minister in what they described as unhealthy distraction to good Governance in the state.
Additionally, the protesters voiced their concerns over what they perceived as President Bola Tinubu’s support for the FCT Minister in the ongoing political crisis in the State, especially with the move by the restored State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Simninalayi Fubura.
The Ijaw youths vowed not to leave the East west road until president Tinubu genuinely decides to settle the political crisis in Rivers state.
The protest which had all the structures of the IYC demands an end to the continued oppression of the Rivers state Governor and its people, describing it as a looming outbreak of violence.
Many of the who spoke with our correspondent appealed to President Tinubu to genuinely intervene to settle the political crisis in Rivers State in the interest of the people.
Recalled that the umbrella body of Ijaw youths worldwide, the IYC has earlier reiterated true earlier warning that Governor Fubara’s tenure must not be truncated, as the Ijaw people will not sit and watch idlly.
The statement signed by it spokesman, Binebia Princewill added, “The free reign of impunity perpetuated by Wike in Rivers State, his careless rantings, and outright disregard for the elderly and the insults rained on the entire Ijaw nation and our highly revered leaders, like the late Pa Clark, the Governor-General of the Ijaw Nation, Sen. Douye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State, King Diete Spiff, and others, is a fight we will fight to the end.
“Wike is too infinitesimal to dare the Ijaw nation, the fourth-largest ethnic group in Nigeria, the largest in the Niger Delta, and in Rivers State as well.
It equally called on President Bola Tinubu to sack Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for clearly painting the current government in bad light and for becoming a threat to peace, and a danger to democracy in Nigeria.
